Family Time provides a dynamic and integrated learning experience for everyone. Younger children delight in the experience and creativity of the older. The older children enjoy helping the little ones learn something new and we all help each other stay safe and happy.

My mom made our clothes and often dressed us as triplets although there is 4 years between us. I don't remember having an aversion to it until we were in California. For years, Miller, a research cardiologist, has been studying the effects of happiness -- or things that make people happy -- on our hearts. He began his research with laughter, and found watching funny movies and laughing at them could actually open up blood vessels, allowing blood to circulate more freely.

Miller thought, if laughter can do that, why not music? So, he tested the effects of music on the cardiovascular system. "Turns out music may be one of the best de-stressors -- either by playing or even listening to music," said Miller.

Where did Ground Hogs Day Come From?

Some history about Ground Hogs Day.

Today we celebrate three holidays, all of them from the same source.

February 2nd is a "cross-quarter" day in the solar calendar, which means that it falls exactly between a solstice and an equinox.

It's the ancient Celtic celebration of Imbolc, in honor of Brigit, the goddess of fire, poetry, healing, and childbirth. Brigit brings the healing power of the sun back to the world on Imbolc, a day that carries the first promise of spring. Imbolc comes from the Old Irish i mbolg, meaning "in the belly," because this is the time when ewes became pregnant to deliver spring lambs.

The Christians took over the Celtic celebration and made February 2nd into a Christian holiday, Candlemas Day. Candlemas Day celebrates the presentation of Jesus at the Temple exactly 40 days after Christmas.

There are many old sayings about today — about the emergence of animals from their winter dens and omens that predict the season ahead. One English saying goes:

If Candlemas day be fair and bright,
Winter will have another flight.
But if Candlemas day bring clouds and rain,
Winter is gone and won't come again.

There was a tradition in many European countries of watching animals — especially badgers — to see how they acted on this day. If they returned to their dens, it meant that there was still a long winter ahead.

German immigrants in Pennsylvania found that there weren't a lot of badgers in America, but there were a lot of groundhogs, so the holiday evolved into Groundhog Day. The first reference to Groundhog Day is from 1841, in the diary of a storekeeper in Morgantown, Pennsylvania. He wrote: "Last Tuesday, the 2nd, was Candlemas day, the day on which, according to the Germans, the Groundhog peeps out of his winter quarters and if he sees his shadow he pops back for another six weeks' nap, but if the day be cloudy he remains out, as the weather is to be moderate."

Ludlows Island

This is a larger view of where we are spending the week. This beautiful place is called Ludlows Island. We are not on the Island but are facing it in a great cabin that is called North Side just across (to the north). The kids canoe back and forth from the lodge on the island and to the other cabins in the family. All together the Peterson clan is occupying 6 cabins so there is plenty of room to roam.

Today is rainy and cold, there is even a fire crackling in the fireplace here on the Northside. It has been a relaxing day of watching the Olympics, a little doodling on the computer (we oddly have wireless access - but no cell phone service) and general dozing. My sunburned shoulders appreciate the change in weather.

Welcome to the first day of summer! My husband Trygve is an avid fisher man who happily talks me into a boat ride once in a while.

On this particular evening the sky was clear, the weather fine and the fish were biting. We caught 27 - an assortment of crappies, sunnys, blue gills and bass on Prior Lake

Minnesota Orchestra plays for Free

The Minnesota Orchestra is kicking off its three-week Percussion Festival with a FREE concert on Peavey Plaza. Join music Director Osmo Vanska and the Orchestra for lunch at noon on May 21.
Preschool is over, take a field trip - jump on the light rail from the 28th street station - or from the MOA transit stations (under Bloomingdales), the train runs about every 10 minutes. Take it all the way to the Nicollet Mall. then stroll down the Mall to Orchestra Hall - Peavey Plaza is just next door.

60 Minutes BEFORE the concert music will begin - come early and enjoy Mu Daiko, a local Japanese Taiko drumming group. BIG DRUMS - you will like it!!

If it rains, the concert will be held indoors at Orchestra Hall.

Jumping Beans!

Jumping Beans is the Kindermusik Class for Preschool kids this JUNE. Pictured on the front is Diego - he walks around his village in Peru, looking for things that could make instruments but his family always asks that he "find a quieter instrument." That is what we will be doing each day. Along with introducing the keyboard in a 4 year old friendly way, having a fun filled music lesson, enjoying fresh air outside, we will also be making a new instrument each day, just like Diego. Allow Kindermusik to stretch your child's mind this summer as we sing, dance, play and create.

International Children's Festival

I am so excited to share the information about the FLNT HILLS 2008 INTERNATIONAL CHILDREN'S FESTIVAL. It is held at the Ordway in St. Paul on Saturday May 31 and Sunday June 1. There are shows from all over the world - lots of free outdoor concerts but all performances in side the center are just $5,00 - all shows, all seats.

This is a great opportunity to go see some live music with your kids - and it is less than a movie! More to come later on my picks for your little ones.

Alright, I have clearly been having a bloggers block - that has lasted several months. It lives with thoughts like, "oh, nobody wants to hear this." or " I am sure everyone has already seen that." These strange thoughts pop upout of no where and seem to make decisions independent of my input.

So, I am putting all of that aside, and am going to commit to blogging regularly again. I like it. It makes me smile and I love sharing little things with all of you. If you have already seen something I put up, that's okay, if you didn't want to read this or that - that's okay. I am going to start putting it all up again anyway.

Whew, that is a load off my mind, and heart.

How many times I have heard these words, now it has been captured for proof on video. I always say, it doesn't matter what kids do in front of me, it is how they play music at home that counts! That is true - but oooh, how cute is this!

The Carl Webb Band

I cold not resist posting this picture of my Uncle Donald's band. He sends me so many good things that land here for everyone to enjoy. (He is the guy on the right, in the orange shirt and jacket holding drum sticks)

My Uncle Donald has lived 85 years and is still playing drums in the Carl Webb Band, has embraced the computer and the internet, and is the most optimistic person I have ever known. It goes to show what a life time playing music can do.

Autism is the fastest growing epidemic in this country. Nationally, 1 in 150 children are diagnosed with it. In Minnesota it's even higher 1 in 105, the third highest rate in the country. It is critically important to see this play - We have all been touched by this epidemic, and its impact on our society has just begun. Several community performances are being offered FREE OF CHARGE sponsored by: Partners in Excellence, The Minnesota Autism Center and Greater Twin Cities ARC. This play is most appropriate for adults and children over 13 years old.

Autistic License has been named on of the 10 best plays of 2007 and recently was nominated for the national Theater Critics New Play Award.

Yesterday was my dear sister Elizabeth's birthday!!
Here is a picture of us taken a few years ago on a hot hot summer day. Hmmm - Elizabeth loves the hot weather and is one of the very . . no maybe the only person I know to be a hold out on air conditioning.
